Excellent summary. A couple of additional points on rules that I have seen messed up. 1) Retreating: in addition, the defending army may only retreat if the attacking army continues the attack. If the attacking army only attacks once and then stops, the defender cannot retreat.
Hunt for the Ring does have one other distinguishing feature in that it has two starkly different game phases to describe. Actually, I have since purchased this game and I think both rule books (this one and War of the Ring) are about identical to each other in complexity and "wordiness" and, as you said, traits.
