Theoretically, once you made a vassal out of a companion, he is not anymore a companion, so I guess you should be able to create an infinite number of vassals - as long as you have fief to give them. The easiest way to make friends with them though is to be at war with their faction. When you beat them in battle, let them go rather than take them prisoner. I just found out : focus points are gained every level, but attribute points are every 3 levels. It is written in the tooltip when you hover over your number of points, on the top left corner. You get companions pre levelled to a certain point, but you should be able to pick focus and perks from there on as they level.
